Blood Donor (1)
BLOOD DONATION

Raham Foundation Launches #LIFESAVER Blood Donor Registry Campaign

To mark this year’s World Blood Donor Day, Raham Foundation has officially launched the #LIFESAVER Blood Donor Registry Campaign, a vital initiative aimed at increasing voluntary blood donation and creating a comprehensive donor database in Rivers State.

The campaign, flagged off today in Port Harcourt, seeks to address the persistent shortage of safe blood in hospitals and clinics across the state. Through awareness drives and strategic partnerships with medical institutions, Raham Foundation aims to recruit healthy individuals aged 18–60 to voluntarily join the donor registry.

“There is an urgent need to improve access to safe blood, especially in times of emergency. With #LIFESAVER, we want to make blood donation not only a civic responsibility but a community culture,”

Across Nigeria, thousands of lives are lost every year due to the lack of timely access to safe blood.

According to the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC), Nigeria needs over 1.8 million units of blood annually, yet collects only about 500,000 units — barely a third of the need. This shortage means that:

  • Pregnant women facing complications during childbirth often die because blood isn’t available.

  • Children with severe anemia from malaria or sickle cell crises face preventable deaths.

  • Accident victims and surgical patients may not survive because safe blood couldn’t be sourced in time.

An estimated 1 in 4 maternal deaths in Nigerian hospitals is linked to severe bleeding and lack of blood supply.

Key Objectives of the #LIFESAVER Campaign:

  • Raise public awareness of the life-saving impact of blood donation.

  • Build a state-wide registry of willing, pre-screened blood donors.

  • Mobilize support for hospitals and patients in critical need of transfusions.

The Foundation is calling on community members, youth groups, civil society, and healthcare workers to participate in and support the initiative.

Registration is now open to eligible donors between the ages of 18 to 55 years. Interested donors should click on this link to go to our donor registry page.

A VISIT TO FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL CENTRE, BOROKIRI – PORT HARCOURT
PRISON/CORRECTION CENTERS

A VISIT TO FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL CENTRE, BOROKIRI – PORT HARCOURT

Raham Foundation was honored to pay a visit to the Federal Correctional Centre located in Borokiri, Port Harcourt. This maximum-security facility is reported to be one of the largest in the country by inmate population, housing over four thousand individuals.

The prison population is often forgotten by the rest of society. It is not a place most people ever think to visit, and those who find themselves on the wrong side of the law can quickly feel helpless and hopeless. As part of Raham Foundation’s mission to “wipe the tears of the helpless needy,” we reached out to sponsors and volunteers and embarked on a prison visitation project.

Our Vision Coordinator led a team of volunteers, accompanied by our Coordinator for Prison Outreaches, Mr. Akaraka. The team came bearing clothes, toiletries, and hygiene supplies — including cartons of bathing and washing soap, detergents, hundreds of toothbrushes, cartons of toothpaste, and several bundles of toilet rolls. We also brought along snacks and other edibles.

With the exception of Mr. Akaraka, none of the volunteers had ever visited a correctional facility. The delegation arrived at the center at 9:00 a.m., as we had been informed that visiting hours run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We were warmly welcomed by the Chaplain, who gave us a brief orientation and guided us through the check-in and security procedures.

The atmosphere within the facility was quite different from what we had imagined. It was lively. Inmates, dressed in plain clothes, were engaged in various activities — some playing football, and one even creating a beautiful drawing in the sand. If one had been brought in unknowingly during visiting hours, they might not have realized it was a prison, aside from the high fences surrounding the premises.

After a brief stop at the welfare office, we proceeded to the chapel, where we witnessed a vibrant praise and worship session — more spirited than what is seen in many churches. The inmates sang, danced, and worshipped God with such joy and passion that it moved us deeply. The instrumentalists— from the keyboardist, drummer, guitarists, and singers — performed professionally, and were all inmates.

Following the worship session, we were invited to share God’s word and encourage the inmates via scripture. Though their physical freedom is restricted, we reminded them that they are not limited in many other ways. Our Prison Outreach Coordinator spoke on the topic “Decision for the Future,” encouraging them to make better choices, regardless of their past, and to use their time in the facility wisely — describing it as “a school with no teacher or blackboard.”

He also shared his powerful personal testimony: having once served seven years in the same correctional center, he entered unable to read or write. Despite ridicule from his cellmates, he resolved to learn from other inmates — and did. Now He is a learned evangelist. His story resonated deeply with those present.

Our welfare packages were distributed among the inmates and we learned about the center’s educational program. They requested support for learning materials, including exercise books, pens, erasers, pencils, and basic English and Mathematics textbooks. The facility also runs trade and craft training programs.

As visiting hours came to an end, we exited the chapel and the center with a renewed commitment to return. Due to time constraints, we were only able to visit the male section on this trip.

Raham Foundation is currently planning follow-up visits, with the goal of supporting the center’s education and literacy programs and visiting the female section with similar supplies. We are also seeking to partner with legal advisers to provide free legal representation to as many inmates as possible. A significant number of the prison population — over two thousand — are awaiting trial, many for several years due to the slow pace of justice.

It is our hope that this small act of mercy and kindness will bring hope and comfort to those imprisoned, especially to the innocents among them.

MEDICAL OUTREACH

Free Medical Outreach for Nonwa Community- Tia LGA, Rivers State

Following the success of our previous collaboration, Raham Foundation once again partnered with CEFMORSI International to deliver another impactful free medical outreach—this time to the resilient people of Norwa Community, Tia Local Government Area in Rivers State.

Held on the 7th of December 2024, this outreach aimed to continue the mission of bridging the healthcare gap in rural and underserved regions. A dedicated team of medical professionals and volunteers came together with one goal: to provide free, quality healthcare to the people of Nonwa and its surrounding communities.

The event featured a full medical team including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, and support volunteers who provided a wide range of medical services. Residents benefited from free consultations, general health checkups, laboratory testing, and essential medication distribution, all delivered with care and compassion.

Services Provided

  • Medical Consultations & General Checkups: Residents of all ages received professional medical advice and assessments.
  • Laboratory Testing: On-site rapid diagnostic tests were conducted to aid accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Medication Distribution: Free essential medications were provided to treat both acute and chronic health conditions.

The outreach served hundreds of individuals, many of whom would otherwise face barriers to accessing healthcare. From the elderly to young children, the community turned out in large numbers, grateful for the support and medical attention they received.

This initiative reflects the shared commitment of Raham Foundation and CEFMORSI International to advance healthcare access for all—regardless of location or financial ability. By prioritizing rural communities often left behind, the partnership is actively addressing health disparities and promoting long-term well-being.

As we look to the future, Raham Foundation remains steadfast in our mission. Plans are already in motion for more outreach programs aimed at expanding our reach and deepening our impact.

This outreach in Norwa Community is more than an event—it is a continuation of a movement. A movement built on compassion, service, and the belief that every life deserves access to quality healthcare.
