Raham Foundation Launches #LIFESAVER Blood Donor Registry Campaign

To mark this year’s World Blood Donor Day, Raham Foundation has officially launched the #LIFESAVER Blood Donor Registry Campaign, a vital initiative aimed at increasing voluntary blood donation and creating a comprehensive donor database in Rivers State.

The campaign, flagged off today in Port Harcourt, seeks to address the persistent shortage of safe blood in hospitals and clinics across the state. Through awareness drives and strategic partnerships with medical institutions, Raham Foundation aims to recruit healthy individuals aged 18–60 to voluntarily join the donor registry.

Across Nigeria, thousands of lives are lost every year due to the lack of timely access to safe blood.

According to the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC), Nigeria needs over 1.8 million units of blood annually, yet collects only about 500,000 units — barely a third of the need.This shortage means that:

• Pregnant women facing complications during childbirth often die because blood isn’t available.

• Children with severe anemia from malaria or sickle cell crises face preventable deaths.

• Accident victims and surgical patients may not survive because safe blood couldn’t be sourced in time.

An estimated 1 in 4 maternal deaths in Nigerian hospitals is linked to severe bleeding and lack of blood supply.

Key Objectives of the #LIFESAVER Campaign:

• Raise public awareness of the life-saving impact of blood donation.

• Build a state-wide registry of willing, pre-screened blood donors.

• Mobilize support for hospitals and patients in critical need of transfusions.

The Foundation is calling on community members, youth groups, civil society, and healthcare workers to participate in and support the initiative.
